How often should I get a physical?
Adults should get a comprehensive physical exam every year. Even if you feel healthy, annual visits catch problems early and give you a baseline to track changes over time. If you have chronic conditions, you may need more frequent monitoring.
Is my annual physical really free?
Under the Affordable Care Act, one preventive visit per year is covered at 100% by all insurance plans with no copay or deductible. This includes your physical exam, age-appropriate screenings, and recommended vaccinations.
Do I need to fast before my physical?
For most people, fasting is no longer required for cholesterol testing. However, if we're checking your fasting blood sugar or you have diabetes, we'll ask you to fast for 8–12 hours before your appointment. We'll let you know when you schedule.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Bring your insurance card, a list of all medications and supplements you take (or the bottles), any recent lab results from other providers, and a list of questions or health concerns you want to discuss.
What vaccinations will I need?
This depends on your age and health history. Common adult vaccines include annual flu shots, COVID-19 boosters, tetanus every 10 years, shingles vaccine at age 50, and pneumonia vaccines for those 65+. We'll review your vaccination history and recommend what you need.
Can I do a preventive visit by telemedicine?
Partly. The conversation, risk review, and lifestyle counseling parts of preventive care work well by telemedicine, but a complete physical exam and lab work need an in-person visit. We'll help you combine the two so nothing important gets skipped.
