Well-child visits, by age
Checkups are frequent early because so much changes so fast, then settle into a yearly rhythm. Most plans cover them at no cost.
Newborn & First Year
A visit within days of coming home, then around 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months. Weight and feeding, jaundice, sleep, and the first round of immunizations — plus real time for the questions new parents are often too embarrassed to ask.
Toddler & Preschool
15, 18, 24, and 30 months, then yearly from 3. Speech and motor milestones, autism screening at 18 and 24 months, iron and lead testing where indicated, and eating and sleep patterns that worry you more than they should.
School Age
Annual visits covering growth, vision and hearing, blood pressure, and school or sports physicals. This is where asthma, allergies, and ADHD most often surface — and where a provider who knows your child helps most.
Adolescent
Annual visits with part of the time confidential, as teens are entitled to. Mood, sleep, screens, sexual health, and vaping or substance use — asked directly, without judgment, and with a clear explanation of what stays private and what doesn't.
On vaccines: we follow the CDC schedule and we'll take as long as you need to talk through any concern you have. Questions get a real answer, not a lecture — and never a dismissal.
When to call us, and when to go straight to the ER
Parents are told constantly to "call your doctor," which isn't much help at 11 p.m. Here's the honest version of what's urgent and what can wait for morning:
- Go to the ER or call 911: trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, a seizure, unresponsiveness or extreme difficulty waking, a stiff neck with fever and light sensitivity, a rash that doesn't fade when you press a glass on it, or a fever of 100.4°F or higher in a baby under 3 months. These don't wait.
- Call us the same day: fever lasting more than three days, ear pain, a sore throat with fever, vomiting or diarrhea with signs of dehydration (fewer wet diapers, no tears, dry mouth), a worsening cough, or a child who simply isn't acting like themselves.
- Can usually wait for a routine visit: a plain runny nose, a mild cough with normal energy and appetite, most rashes without fever, and the everyday questions about eating, sleep, and behavior.
- Fever isn't the enemy. How your child looks and acts matters far more than the number on the thermometer. A comfortable, drinking, playing child with 103°F is less concerning than a listless one with 100.5°F.

- When in doubt, call. Nobody here will think you overreacted. That's what the phone is for.

How fast can my child be seen when they're sick?
Same-day appointments are available for sick visits — fevers, coughs, ear infections, and similar concerns. We know that when your child isn't feeling well, waiting weeks for an opening isn't an option.

Yes. Continuity matters in pediatric care — the same provider gets to know your child's personality and history, and your family's needs, visit over visit, rather than starting from scratch each time.

Can pediatric visits be done by telemedicine?
Many follow-up visits, behavioral health check-ins, and straightforward sick-visit consultations can be done by telemedicine. Well-child exams, immunizations, and physicals need to happen in person, and we'll always be clear about which is which.
Is pediatric care covered by insurance?
We accept nearly every major insurance plan, including Medicaid, and well-child visits are typically covered at no cost under most plans. We'll verify your specific coverage before the appointment.
When is a fever serious enough to worry about?
How your child looks and behaves matters more than the number. A child who's drinking, playing, and responsive at 103°F is generally less concerning than a listless one at 100.5°F. The clear exceptions: any fever of 100.4°F or higher in a baby under 3 months is an emergency — go in, don't wait. So is a fever with trouble breathing, a stiff neck, a rash that doesn't blanch when pressed, a seizure, or a child you can't rouse properly. Otherwise, call us the same day if a fever runs past three days or your child seems to be getting worse rather than better.
Do teenagers get to talk to you privately?
Yes, and it's an important part of adolescent care. Part of a teen visit is one-on-one, without a parent in the room, so questions about mood, sleep, sex, vaping, and substances can actually get asked. New Jersey law protects the confidentiality of certain services for minors. We explain clearly to both the teen and the parent what stays private and what doesn't — safety concerns are always shared. The goal is a young adult who's willing to tell a doctor the truth, which is a habit worth building before they leave home.
