Where Medical MJ May Shine Brighter Than Conventional Treatment
Western medicine remains the right first choice for most conditions — that's why we practice integrative, not alternative, medicine. But for some patients, standard treatments fall short or come with tradeoffs that medical MJ can help avoid. A few examples we see regularly:
- Chronic pain without the risks of long-term opioids: for patients managing musculoskeletal or visceral chronic pain, medical MJ can reduce reliance on opioid painkillers, avoiding the dependency and overdose risk that comes with long-term opioid therapy.
- Nausea that doesn't respond to standard antiemetics: patients undergoing chemotherapy or living with chronic nausea sometimes get little relief from first-line anti-nausea medications; MJ-based options can offer an additional tool when those have been tried and haven't worked.
- Treatment-resistant seizure disorders: some epilepsy patients continue to have seizures despite trying multiple anticonvulsant medications. MJ-derived treatment is a recognized option worth discussing with your neurologist and us when conventional options have plateaued.
- PTSD and anxiety with medication side effects: some patients find the sexual side effects, emotional blunting, or weight changes from SSRIs intolerable enough to stop treatment altogether. Medical MJ can be one option we discuss as part of a broader plan, alongside therapy and other medications.

Initial Medical Evaluation (about 30 minutes)
Our medical MJ team — most often Marie Gawronski, PA-C, who evaluates the majority of new patients — reviews your medical history, current symptoms, and previous treatments. This is a real medical evaluation, not a formality.

Complete a Urine Drug Screen
Required before certification, completed in our office or at an outside lab, to ensure safe and appropriate MJ use.

Receive Certification & Digital Card
Once your drug screen is reviewed, we schedule your second visit, issue your physician certification, and help you register with the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission. You receive your digital card instantly.

Follow-Up Care & Quarterly Renewals
Return every 3 months (required by state) for renewal and ongoing monitoring of your treatment response — dose and strain adjustments, side-effect management, and coordination with your other medications.

How long does NJ medical MJ certification take?
Most patients complete the process within 7-10 days: an initial evaluation, a required urine drug screen, then a second visit to issue certification. Once certified, you receive your digital card instantly through the NJ Cannabis Regulatory Commission portal.
Can I get evaluated by telemedicine?
Yes. Initial and follow-up evaluations are available by telemedicine for patients who qualify, in addition to in-person visits at any of our 4 NJ locations. The required drug screen can be completed in our office or at an outside lab.
Does insurance cover medical MJ evaluations?

Why is a urine drug screen required?
It's part of prescribing responsibly, and it applies across the practice — not a hurdle aimed at MJ patients specifically. A screen tells us what else is on board, which matters because MJ interacts meaningfully with sedatives, opioids, and some psychiatric medications. It also protects you: certification puts your care on the record with a physician who's actually monitoring it. Screens are done in our office or at an outside lab, and the result is discussed with you, not used against you.
Are there people you won't certify?
Yes, and we'd rather tell you before you book. We're cautious or decline where MJ carries real risk — during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with a history of psychosis or an active psychotic disorder, in adolescents, with significant cardiac disease, and where a screen or history points to a substance use disorder that certification would make worse. We're also honest when your condition would be better served by treatment we can provide directly. A genuine evaluation means "no" has to be a possible answer; otherwise the "yes" means nothing.
