How acupuncture supports women's health
Women's bodies go through remarkable changes throughout life — from monthly cycles to pregnancy to menopause. When hormones feel out of balance, the effects ripple through your entire body: irregular periods, intense PMS, hot flashes, fertility challenges, mood swings, and sleep disruption. Unlike hormone replacement therapy or medications that come with side effects, acupuncture works with your body's own healing mechanisms.
Women's health conditions we treat with acupuncture
Menstrual Issues
Irregular or absent periods, heavy bleeding, painful periods, severe PMS, PMDD, endometriosis-related pain.
Menopause Support
Hot flashes and night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, anxiety, perimenopause symptoms, energy restoration.
Fertility Support
Difficulty conceiving, IVF support, hormone regulation, PCOS, stress reduction for conception, post-miscarriage support.
Pregnancy & Postpartum
Pregnancy-related nausea, back and pelvic pain, labor preparation, breast tenderness, hormonal headaches, and recovery support. Postpartum mood changes are screened for and treated medically — acupuncture supports sleep and tension, it doesn't replace that care.

How we work out your plan
"Hormonal" is where a lot of women's symptoms get filed and then ignored. We'd rather find out what's actually happening first, because that changes whether acupuncture is the right tool, a helpful addition, or beside the point:
- A real cycle and symptom history. Timing, flow, pain pattern, sleep, mood, and how long this has been going on — not a two-minute version of it.
- Hormone and lab testing where it's warranted. Thyroid, iron, vitamin D, and hormone panels. An underactive thyroid and anemia both masquerade as "just hormones," and both are treatable in a completely different way.
- Ruling out what needs a different answer. Fibroids, endometriosis, PCOS, and abnormal bleeding get worked up and referred appropriately — acupuncture may still help the pain, but it isn't the treatment for the underlying condition.
- Coordination with your OB/GYN or fertility specialist. If you're in an IVF cycle, treatment is timed around your protocol rather than run in parallel by someone who doesn't know what's happening.
- A defined course. Weekly sessions for six to eight weeks is the usual starting point, then maintenance every two to four weeks if you're responding.
- Pregnancy-safe point selection. Certain points are avoided during pregnancy — the reason this belongs with a board-certified medical acupuncturist rather than anyone with a set of needles.
Your hormones don't have to run the show.

Acupuncture is one option, not the only one
Plenty of practices offer either hormones or "natural" care and expect you to pick a side. We use whichever combination is actually working for you, and change it when it isn't.
Comprehensive Hormone Testing
Kayla Yanga, NP runs an in-house perimenopause and menopause program built on extensive hormone testing and symptom-based treatment — not a one-size-fits-all script. See the program.
Chinese Herbal Formulas
Custom formulas for menstrual symptoms, hot flashes, and sleep, prescribed by a physician who checks them against every medication you already take.
Hormone Therapy When It Fits
If hormone replacement is the right answer for your symptoms and risk profile, we say so and prescribe it — acupuncture is offered as an alternative or an addition, never as a reason to withhold treatment.
The Routine Care Too
Pap tests, pelvic exams, breast screening, and contraception all happen in the same practice, on visits long enough to actually discuss them.
Most patients end up somewhere in the middle — acupuncture for hot flashes and sleep, a herbal formula for the weeks around a cycle, and Western treatment for whatever testing turned up. That's the point of having all of it in one place.

Learn moreWomen's health acupuncture questions
Does acupuncture really help with menstrual cramps?
Yes. Multiple research studies show acupuncture significantly reduces menstrual pain and cramping. Many women notice improvement within 2–3 sessions.
How many treatments will I need for hot flashes?
Most women begin with weekly sessions for 6–8 weeks, and many notice a reduction in hot flash frequency and intensity within the first month. After the initial series, we transition to maintenance visits every 2–4 weeks.
Can acupuncture help me get pregnant?
Acupuncture supports fertility by regulating hormones, improving blood flow to reproductive organs, and reducing stress. Many women use it alongside IVF treatment or as natural fertility support, and we'll coordinate with your fertility specialist if you're undergoing assisted reproduction.
Will my insurance cover acupuncture for women's health?
Many insurance plans now cover medical acupuncture for menstrual pain, menopause symptoms, and other women's health conditions. Coverage varies by plan, so we verify your benefits before your first appointment.
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
Yes, when performed by a qualified medical acupuncturist. We use specific pregnancy-safe points to help with morning sickness, back pain, and labor preparation. Certain points are avoided during pregnancy, which is why it's essential to see a board-certified medical acupuncturist.
Do I have to choose between acupuncture and hormone therapy?
No — and we'd be doing you a disservice if we framed it that way. If hormone replacement is appropriate for your symptoms and risk profile, we'll say so and prescribe it. Plenty of patients use both: hormone therapy for the underlying deficit, acupuncture for hot flashes, sleep, and stress. The combination is decided from your testing and symptoms, not from a philosophy about which kind of medicine is better.
Could my symptoms be something other than hormones?
Often, yes — which is why we test rather than assume. Fatigue, weight change, hair thinning, irregular periods, and mood changes are classic thyroid symptoms, and heavy periods frequently cause iron-deficiency anemia that explains the exhaustion by itself. Both are simple to check and treated completely differently from a hormonal imbalance. Being a full family medicine practice means we can order those labs and act on the results the same week.
