Common questions about choosing, using, and switching birth-control methods
The best birth control is the one you'll actually use consistently. During your appointment, we'll discuss your health history, lifestyle, future pregnancy plans, and any concerns you have about side effects. Together, we'll find the option that fits your life right now—and we can always change it if needed.
Side effects vary greatly from person to person, and many modern formulations have far fewer side effects than older versions. We'll discuss all the non-hormonal options available too, including copper IUDs, barrier methods, and natural family planning. If you do try hormonal birth control and don't feel right, we'll adjust your plan right away.
Most insurance plans cover birth control at no cost to you under the Affordable Care Act. This includes the contraception counseling visit and most prescription methods. We'll verify your coverage before prescribing to ensure there are no surprise costs.
Yes. Emergency contraception is available over-the-counter at pharmacies, but if you prefer a prescription or need guidance on using it, we can help. It works best when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex—ideally within 72 hours, though some types work up to 5 days.
We refer IUD and arm implant insertions to OB-GYN specialists who perform these procedures regularly. However, we'll help you choose the right device, coordinate the referral, and provide all your ongoing contraceptive care and follow-ups after placement.
Most birth control methods are completely reversible—your fertility returns quickly once you stop using them. We'll help you choose options that align with your timeline. If you're planning to conceive within a year or two, we might recommend different methods than if you're thinking 5-10 years out.
